Se7en - Our inspiration

As a group we watched several horror film openings and analysed how they add credits to the film. The opening to the film Se7en was our main inspiration because this was how we wanted our credits to look. The opening uses different distorted/handwritten fonts along with the incidental music. Each credit has its own transaction which is may flicker and flash slightly to create leave the audience 'on edge'. We think that these characteristics give connotations of horror and suspicion which suits our genre.

Recording the 999 call - Problems

Me and Esme recorded a voice over of a 999 call that would be overlaid onto our film open that would sound as if it was a real conversation between an operator and the victim. One lesson we came to edit it and unfortunately it had been deleted and we were unable to access it. We feel that this would have been an effective contribution to our film but with the circumstances we had to quickly think of an alternative idea as we were running our of time.

The 999 Call

As a group we decided that a 999 call between an operator and one of the victims would benefit our film open. We chose to add this to our film because we thought it would add tension and make it scary, also after looking at other film opens for horror films it seemed that this would be conventional and would suit our genre.

As we were watching other horror film openings we found this trailer that inspired us to do the 999 call.

Lesson time - Monday 23rd January

After trying to see if we could retrieve the clips, Esme and I went back to the Audacity document and there was an error sign saying that we were unable to open it. This meant that we could not use the voice over that we had spent a long time creating. We discussed the problem as a group and we decided that it would take up too much valuable time if we re-recorded it, so we made the decision to not use another alternative one but to just remove the idea.

Target audience research for font

After changing the title of our film we decided to survey 20 people, asking them which font they preferred. They were all over the age of 15 and enjoy horror films. This helped us when we were editing because we could relate to our target audience more.

These are the results:

Our idea - change of name

We changed the name from facelift to strangers calling because we thought that this would suit our film more because of the storyline and the name seems more scary.

Production - Making fake blood

I made the fake blood for our characters to wear during filming. This helped to create more of a realistic feel and made the characters look a lot more effective. I found the video below on YouTube and it shows you step by step how to make fake blood. We changed the colour and consistency a little to suit our groups idea.

Lesson time - Thursday 19th January

During this lesson Esme and I had finished the recording of the voice over but as we came to edit it together we realised that as Esme had been saving each clip, she did not save them as a new document each time, but was saving them on top of each other. This meant that when the clip was played all of the recordings would play at the same time. We later went to the technician in school to see if there was any way that we could retrieve the clips.

Lesson time - Tuesday 17th January

In this lesson I finished recording the voice over with Esme and Tom for the phone call, I played the character that was distressed on the phone call and Tom played the emergency services telephone operator. While we were recording Sophie and Catt were editing.

Lesson time - Monday 16th January

In this lesson Esme and I created a script for the telephone call that would be played non diegetically over the film opening, then we started to record.

Lesson time - Thursday 12th January

During this lesson Catt and Sophie continued editing the film open and I created a storyboard that we had all decided on. We had a slight problem with the editing because some of the clips would not play on Final Cut Express, we asked for help from the school technician and he helped us to change the format of the file and then we could watch it.

Lesson time - Tuesday 10th January

This lesson was mainly spent making the soundtrack, Sophie and I were the only ones from our group that were in school and we were just trying out different sounds and seeing what worked.
